Some may disagree with what I am about to say but I am so glad I am done with this book. To me it was boring, slow, and very repetitive with the events and circumstances. It was a bit relieving to know that Sal finally realized that Dean is actually a huge jerk, but I got upset at the fact that he just accepts the fact that he’s such a jerk and lets Dean get away with it. For a second there, I really thought Dean was going to mature after he went with Sal to live in New York, but obviously, it just isn’t in his nature to do anything for anyone but himself and his only apparent loyalty is with Sal, because he betrays women left and right. Dean just gets me mad because I don’t get how someone can be so deceiving of himself and switch his personality in such an extreme manner. From caring husband and father to a deserter and a grown up man chasing teenage dreams of living an adventurous life. He even ruined his and Sal’s dream of going to Italy with his recklessness. This book had an overall message that I think I understood in the first fifty pages. The message was that lost souls are in search of other lost souls. Maybe because lost souls don’t feel like their life has any true meeting, and so they search for a soul that has seemingly less self-esteem and less understanding of life to make themselves feel superior to the other soul and see their life has more meaning and direction.  

Dean is the perfect example of what not to be. He is what people aspire to be because we sometimes get tired of our same old boring life and look for spontaneity and adventure to derive from what we usually do, but that kind of life is not meant to last. That is why Sal finally started to settle down after his adventures with Dean; he realized his life was on a highway to nowhere and although this was fun, it was going to get him nowhere in his writing and he’d probably end up in jail like Dean. Dean is someone you love to meet and be around for a little while, but his being gets annoying and the time to say goodbye comes soon enough.
