Brothers Till Death

Sal started off following Dean because he looked up to Dean as a role model and as the perfect figure of what he wants to be like and how he wants to live his life. He gave up all he had basically to join Dean’s little entourage and to have the adventure of his life to find his true self and maybe some more meaning in his seemingly boring and unimportant life. Through Dean, Sal has gained many new friendships and memories, visited new places and tried new and different things. Safe to say, Dean has given Sal’s life a whole new look, but it has not been a walk in the park. The struggle Sal has to go through to live like Dean is ridiculous, and even more ridiculous that Sal keeps going back to it. The lack of money and food, the constant worry of where they’ll sleep, and the never ending desire to be nomadic when they have no money or means of transportation.

It seems to me that the more people Sal meets and befriends, the more people get tired of Dean and start hating him. It’s understandable, the reason why people hate Dean.  Dean was everyone’s idol at first, at least all the men’s idol. The women, the partying, the adventurous life, the reckless behavior with no single care left behind him; the bachelor man’s dream. Now things have changed. People have grown tired of him and his ways. His family even decided to get rid of him and his father completely and eliminate them from any family affairs. People know that if Dean is coming, trouble is following him. Everyone is now rejecting Dean’s company, everyone except for Sal. Sal has even come to a point where he sees how much Dean means to him and how much he means to Dean. Dean has found a way to push everyone away one way or another, but never Sal. Sal sees that he is all that Dean has left. Marylou left him, Camille hates him, his family took him out of the family itself, his friends don’t want to see him anymore, Sal is the only company he has. I thought it was a defining moment in their friendship when Sal said that Dean was his brother, and I think that they have now realized they are the most important people in each other’s life.
